Learn how Kahoot! partnered with Common Sense Privacy to build on its long-standing commitment to trust, safety, and transparency

Leading by Example

In today’s digital landscape, privacy is not only a legal requirement but a brand imperative for educators and students. That’s why Kahoot!, a global learning and engagement platform, partnered with Common Sense Privacy to earn the trusted privacy seal.

Since Kahoot! launched in 2013, it has hosted hundreds of millions of learning sessions with over 12 billion non-unique participants in more than 200 countries and regions. Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, the company designed its platform from inception with privacy as part of the product and to comply with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a law enacted by the European Union with global reach. American privacy regulations have varied from state to state and have been evolving quickly.  This makes the Common Sense Privacy Dashboard even more valuable as it helps customers stay on top of all the changes in this quickly evolving regulatory landscape.

To support to these strong privacy protections, Kahoot! relies on both in-house experts and trusted outside advisors to ensure the platform reflects evolving global expectations. Kahoot! chose to partner with Common Sense Privacy because of the strength and trust associated with its privacy ratings and because for more than 20 years, both consumers and educators  have trusted Common Sense Media, as a resource for families and educators to navigate technology responsibly.

Earning the Common Sense Privacy Seal to Raise the Industry Standard

A privacy seal from Common Sense Privacy isn’t just a checkbox — it’s a signal that a platform takes user data seriously. Kahoot! is designed with the ultimate goal of creating a very safe learning experience for students and teachers. For example:

  • No accounts needed: Students can join a Kahoot! with a gamepin or QR code without having to create an account which would require users to input personal information.
  • Minimizes identifiable data: Users are treated as anonymous participants and can use a nickname generator to play and allows no real names to be collected.
  • Limits data exposure: As a fundamental principle, Kahoot! limits the data collected from different types of users to only what is necessary . Since less personal data is collected in the first place, there’s less risk of data being misused, leaked, or shared.
  • Short data retention periods: Kahoot! keeps user data only as long as necessary and does not use it for targeted advertising
  • Supplemental Protections by user: Kahoot! provides additional content protection for children to prevent unintentional sharing of information and protect children users.

“Clearer guidelines and stronger privacy frameworks are increasingly valuable to the customers we serve,” said Eilert Giertsen Hanoa, CEO of Kahoot!. “We’re proud to help raise the bar for privacy across the EdTech industry, alongside other leading vendors.”

The Common Sense Privacy Seal helps consumers, parents and educators  identify products and services from privacy leaders across industries. When customers see the Seal, they know the product meets rigorous privacy criteria and follows best practices for protecting personal data. As part of the Common Sense Privacy Seal Program, Kahoot! completed a comprehensive evaluation using a 200+ question rubric, engaged directly with our privacy analysts, and has committed to regular policy updates and monitoring to maintain their status as privacy leaders.  The program enables Kahoot! to:

  • Stay up to date on changing privacy laws
  • Simplify the path to compliance
  • Build trust through third party (or independent?) verification  with a trusted name in education
  • Lead the way in setting privacy standards

Less than 10% of companies evaluated qualify for this exclusive designation. For Kahoot!, the seal affirmed the strength of its current practices and commitment to continued privacy excellence.

Toward a Safer Digital Future — Together

“In the age of AI, good privacy can remove barriers to adoption and the Seal represents a rigorous standard of care,” said Daphne Li, CEO of Common Sense Privacy, “Coming together to collaborate in this space is critically important to ensuring the future of user privacy in digital learning.”

“Kahoot! is investing in trust to ensure that families and educators continue to feel confident engaging with the platform,” said Hanoa. “With Common Sense Privacy as a trusted guide, we’re building a stronger foundation to protect student privacy today and for the future.”
